Tracey Benson

Tracey Benson (aka bytetime) is a green geek/artist/researcher into connected communities, cross-media, sustainability, tech/art synergies, maps, and walking as creative practice. Her work has focused on the connections between landscape and identity, realised through umbrella projects including Big Banana Time Inc. (1995-2000) and Fauxonomy (2007-2013). Recent work has utilised mobile and handheld online technologies for the creation of virtual and augmented reality works.

In 2001 she received a Master of Arts (Research) from Queensland University of Technology, Queensland, Australia, focusing on souvenirs, nostalgia, and personal identity. In 2010, Benson was awarded a PhD from The Australian National University, Canberra, Australia, which explores online communities and social networking tools.

Recent exhibitions include: Walks of Absent Memory (2013), and Words for Water (Transreal Topologies) (2013). Recent publications include: Finding Balance: Mura Gadi (2013), Mobile Media Practices, Presence and Politics (edited by Kathleen M. Cuminskey and Larissa Hjorth) (2013), and Locating Emerging Media (edited by Ben Aslinger and Germaine Halegoua)(2014). She has participated in many international digital media events including: SCANZ2013; ISEA2011; THATCamp, Canberra 2010; ISEA2008; AOIR 2006; ISEA2004; Siggraph 2001; N5M4, Amsterdam 2003; N5M3; MAAP2000 and MAAP’99.

Benson is a Trustee for New Zealand based interdisciplinary organisation Intercreate. She is also an Adjunct Postdoctoral Fellow at the ANU School of Music, where she is researching semantic web and geolocation technologies and their application to genealogy and Indigenous kinship systems. She is currently based in Canberra, Australia.
