Personal note:

With a solid academic background in Romance Languages and Literatures, Dr. Manuela Mohr has demonstrated a strong commitment to research, teaching, and scholarly contributions across several prestigious institutions.
She is currently working as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Strasbourg until August 2024, and has secured a research position at the University of Saint-Étienne from September 2024 to February 2025. Dr. Mohr’s research interests are coherent, and expanding. They include European and extra-European literatures of the imaginary and mainly the fantastic, from the 19th century to the present day. Her research also focuses on the press, text-image-relations, and the intersections of highbrow and lowbrow cultures. Furthermore, she has worked on plays for puppets and with databases.

Bio:

She began her academic journey as a first-generation-student with a Bachelor’s degree in Romance Languages and Literatures, specializing in French and Italian (major), as well as a Bachelor’s degree in English Languages and Literatures (minor) from the University of Stuttgart and the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon. This was followed by a Master’s degree from the same institution and the ENS de Lyon in Romance Languages and Literatures. Her Master thesis already focused on the fantastic and paved the way to her PhD.
Her doctoral studies (2016-2020) were undertaken at the University Paul-Valéry Montpellier 3 and the University of Stuttgart. She held a paid doctoral position thanks to her convincing presentation of her doctoral project which explores the simultaneous influences and presence of highbrow and lowbrow cultures in the psychological fantastic during the French Second Empire. This work earned her the prestigious German Kurt-Ringger Prize as well as the French Mérimée Prize for the best thesis in her field. These prizes funded the publication of her thesis as a monograph at the Presses universitaires de Saint-Étienne (available for international purchase in Spring 2025 at the latest). Dr. Mohr’s dedication is further evidenced by her awards, such as the "Deutschlandstipendium” Scholarship and the University of Stuttgart Excellence Award, which recognize her academic excellence and potential.
Dr. Mohr’s professional experience is extensive. She has held lecturer and research positions at multiple institutions, including the University of Stuttgart, the University Paul-Valéry Montpellier 3, the IUT Montpellier-Sète and the University of Strasbourg. She taught subjects ranging from English linguistics to communication and various aspects of modern literature. The links between her teachings and her research are strong, with both aspects benefitting from her expertise and experience. Her interdisciplinary research capabilities allow her to integrate methodologies from literature, art history, and philosophy to create comprehensive and innovative research frameworks.
