Bio:

Mona is a freelance game and visual designer with ten years of experience in the games industry, working at the intersection of games, design, and memory culture. As lead designer of the award-winning game The Darkest Files, as well as on numerous other projects in collaboration with historical and educational institutions, she explores how games can communicate and critically engage with complex historical topics.

In addition to her design work, Mona works as a mentor and coach for indie studios, supporting teams in early concept phases as well as throughout ongoing productions. A particular focus of her work lies in game vision, design decision-making, and clear game vision frameworks that help structure creative processes and sustain production.

In her talks, Mona speaks about games as a medium for historical education, the responsibilities and creative possibilities of political games, and about managing game productions with design and game vision at their core.

Design-driven game production: How to set up your game project for success

When you’re juggling design, production, business, and communication, it’s easy to lose the big picture—and to treat every task as urgent. This talk shows how a design-driven vision framework can act as your project’s “map”: clarifying what matters now, what can wait, and what should be dropped. Mona shares concrete methods for turning creative intent into priorities, aligning day-to-day decisions, and shipping without sacrificing the core experience.

This talk explores how video games engage with history beyond the notion of factual accuracy, arguing for historical appropriateness as a more meaningful design goal. It examines the limitations of strict historical accuracy, the impact of player expectations, and the risks of reinforcing stereotypes, while highlighting how research, interpretation, and thoughtful design choices can enable games to address historical topics responsibly and effectively.
